Maurine “Cookie” Smith was a caring Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister, and Friend. She lost her battle with cancer on October 10, 2021 at age 75.
She was born to Guy and Beulah Rhodes on March 29, 1946 in Kennett, Missouri. Soon after her family moved to Southern California, Cookie had her first son, Ron. She would go on to have two more sons, Vernon Jr. and Michael, with her second husband, Vernon Smith. Cookie is survived by nine grandchildren as well as her three sons and husband.
Cookie was a dedicated wife and mother. She had few hobbies and interests outside of her family. She loved cooking and providing meals for holiday gatherings for loved ones. She spent many years working as a cashier at various grocery and general merchandise stores. In 1988, Cookie was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and her work life and love for cooking slowly came to an end. She went on to battle the disease until she was diagnosed with cancer. But even then, she never stopped caring for her family and those around her. Cookie was greatly unselfish and throughout her life sacrificed her own interests for the benefit of loved ones around her.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 am on October 19, 2021 at the Corona Baptist Church at 4450 West Ray Road in Chandler. A brief reception will take place at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona immediately after the service. Dinner will be served back at the church after the reception. Flowers can be sent to the church.
