About Robert Merrell Briggs
IN MEMORY OF
Robert Merrell Briggs March 20, 1939 – April 3, 2026
Robert Merrell Briggs, age 87, passed away on Good Friday, April 3, 2026, surrounded by family. Born in Jerome, Arizona, to James Briggs and Helen Mackett, Robert spent his childhood in Arizona’s mining towns—Jerome, Morenci, and Ajo —where his father worked as a mining engineer. He often recalled the summer he worked in the mine himself, remembering how cool and refreshing the outside air felt compared to the heavy air underground. That summer affirmed his desire to pursue college and set him on the path toward a life of learning and discovery.
Robert will be remembered for his sharp mind, thoughtful spirit, and loving heart. From a young age, he was drawn to philosophy, mathematics, and the search for Truth. He found his connection to Spirit through transcendental consciousness and the beauty of transfinite numbers, and he carried a deep spiritual curiosity throughout his life. While living and working in California as a young man, Robert cherished the time he spent with his grandfather, Franklin Merrell Wolff, discussing philosophy, consciousness, and the nature of life.
Robert earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona. He spent most of his career with Motorola and later retired from Onsemi. Known for his integrity and quiet leadership, Robert led by example and mentored many throughout his career.
In the summer of 1972, Robert married the love of his life, Sharon. Together they shared 54 years of marriage filled with devotion, partnership, and joy.
A devoted husband and father, Robert taught his children that anything was possible; it was simply a matter of “how.” His optimism was unrestrained, his intuition steady, and his faith in his family unshakable. He had a warm, thoughtful sense of humor, a gentle spirit, and a profound capacity for unconditional love.
Robert loved to travel and took his family on many adventures across the country. His daughter fondly remembers long summer drives through beautiful landscapes, especially their favorite haven at the Great Space Center near Lone Pine, California.
Robert is survived by his wife, Sharon Briggs; his daughter, Ann Starks (Joe Starks); his three grandchildren, Aaron, Ethan, and Lily; his sister, Doroethy Leonard; nieces and nephews and their many children; as well as countless friends and colleagues whose lives he touched. He is also followed in death by his son, Ryan Briggs, who passed shortly after him.
Robert made a lasting impact on everyone he met and was an inspiration to his family. His immense love, strength, and wisdom were reflected in everything he did. He is missed deeply. “He has entered the boundless field of peace, where all becomes light.” Arrangements by Bunker’s Garden Chapel, www.bunkerfuneral.com.
