What does it mean to have a big heart? Is it the actual size of one’s heart or is it the expression of acceptance, kindness, and love? Large in stature, Justin David Ellsworth had both a big heart and was lovingly big-hearted. Justin passed away at home in Mesa, Arizona on January 5, 2025. He will be remembered for his quiet acts of service, friendship, acceptance, and loyalty which he freely gave his friends and family.
Justin was born February 11, 1997 in Mesa, Arizona to David (Sonya) Ellsworth and Rosalyn (Samuel) Francis. Justin, the fourth child of seven, was the quintessential middle child with a special relationship to each of his siblings. Justin is survived by sisters Susan, Anna, and Lindsay; and brothers Nathan and Eric. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ryan.
Naturally musical, Justin sang constantly from the time he could talk. His teen years brought a booming voice and vibrant stage presence he enjoyed in both choral and show choir settings. Justin also enjoyed the great outdoors: camping, hiking, skiing, and especially swimming. From the time he was a little child, Justin loved being in water—the first one in and last one out, no matter how cold. An Eagle Scout, Justin was nicknamed “the Polar Bear” by his scout leaders.
Justin loved the comradery of friendships and brotherhood. Optimistic, fun-loving, and witty, he brought a big smile and energy to every gathering. While in a crowd Justin’s quiet demeanor sometimes deceptively muted his sparkling personality, in small groups Justin radiated joy, kept everyone in stitches, or sought out the one who needed a friend. Justin leaves a legacy of kindness. He will be sorely missed by his myriad of friends, his gaming community, work associates, and his many aunts, uncles, cousins and step-siblings.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 17th, 2025 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1249 S 48th St. Mesa, AZ 85206 at 10:00 am with a visitation from 9:00 – 9:45 am.

Sweet is the peace the gospel brings…
Our temporary separation is contrastedi with his uniting with his brother and others in his family. This I truly believe.
I have many fond memories of Justin (and his dog), especially bumping into him on my “mail runs” (he frequently had a knack for either driving up or coming out to leave just as I would arrive) always friendly and welcoming and taking a moment to chat now and then.
Justin’s big heart is Heaven’s gain and our loss. We mourn while Ryan and his grandparents rejoice in Eternal Reunion. God bless and comfort you, David, Sonya, and your whole family, and may your testimonies and the assurances of the Gospel of Jesus Christ sustain each of you in your loss. MUCH LOVE!
We are heartbroken to hear of Justin’s passing. So incredibly sorry for this loss and the void that is left with his passing. Praying for angels to be with your family as you grieve the loss of sweet Justin and for you all to feel the loving arms of our Heavenly Father round about you. We love you.
Sorry to hear of Justin’s passing. He was such joy. I was one of his scout leaders and he was always fun. On one trip in the Spring Sycamore Creek was running and he was swimming like a seal in water. None of the other boys would even get in the cold water. He was my Home Teaching companion and I just loved him. May he always be remembered as the gentle soul that he was. Love Dave DeTemple
Our hearts are broken for this devastating news. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family. We love you Ros and Dave and your children. May you find peace through Christ. We will be watching online but wish we were there to give you all big hugs.
I love you Justin. I’ll miss you and reminisce on the time we shared together. I’ll always appreciate your willingness to lend a helping hand and your mindset to put others before yourself. You’re a top-notch guy and you’ll be remembered continually. I know I speak for all those associated with you during life, we’re truly grateful for the time we had with you. I love you, cousin.
