Helen Ong, 89, passed away on October 20, 2021. Born and raised in Mesa, Helen was a graduate of Mesa High School. Following graduation, she studied education and business at Arizona State University, earning two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree in education. She taught with Mesa Public Schools for 28 years, with the majority of her teaching career spent at Westwood High School. When she wasn’t teaching her business, computer, and shorthand classes, she was helping the family manage their grocery business, the Evergreen Market. Helen was a voracious reader, a prolific home cook, and an avid crafter and cross-stitcher.

She is preceded in death by her father Tong Sheng Ong, mother Wong Young (Mary) Ong, and siblings Virginia, Henry, Benjamin, and Turman Ong. She is survived by her sister Josephine Wall (Robert), nieces Tamara Havlik (Bruce), Roseanne Acevedo (Manuel), and Rebecca Ong (Robert Prince), nephew Michael Wall, and sister-in-law Michele Ong (Rick Lin).

Due to COVID-19, funeral services will be kept private, but a livestream link will be available on the Bunker Family Funerals and Cremation website on Wednesday, November 3 at 12pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Helen’s memory to Helen’s Hope Chest (no relation, just happy coincidence), Sunshine Acres Children’s Home in Mesa, and Hospice of the Valley.

  • Miss Ong was one of my favorite teacher’s. I was in one of her typing classes. I think I was one of a few males in her class. I remember she ask me why I was taking typing and I said “because that’s where the prettiest girls were”. That brought a smile to both of our faces. Great memories.

  • i will miss my visits with helen as i dropped by her home every so often to keep a friendship going since the days i walked to evergreen market to do my mom’s shopping and grab a barq’s to drink as i talked to helen, mary, and benny. i’m just so sad to lose her in my life. i have countless cross stitched tissue holders and she told me of plans to stitch more panda wall art for me, as well as things for my grandkids! how i love her and the entire ong family. please know of my devotion, support and concern at this sad time for all of us. her life revolved around her nieces and their families and that is what made her such a positive happy person. i will miss my friend.

I too so appreciated Evergreen Market…Henry told me how to make beef jerky, Ben was busy at his AZ State job…Helen and her mom Mary worked the registers and what ever else needed done. I was rearing my young family in the 70s on Robson street and could stroll/walk the 3 kids to the market for some groceries and special attention from the Ong family. I later became a stock broker and also enjoyed talking with all but Mary about the markets…they were all so intelligent and humble. Thank you Ong family for enriching the lives of ALL who were fortunate enough to encounter you along life’s way.
