Ned Simmons Brimley, our beloved father passed away peacefully January 25, 2022, surrounded by the love and laughter of his family. Dad was born January 11, 1943, in Salt Lake City, UT to Nedra Simmons. He married Arlene Evans on August 22, 1969, in the Mesa Arizona temple. He was a blessing to his family and had a fun-loving and jovial personality.

Ned is preceded in death by his sweetheart Arlene Evans Brimley, his eldest daughter Lanae Brimley Peck, his parents James Clyde and Nedra Brimley and many other beloved family members. He is survived by his daughters Kristen Ashcroft (Ben), and Jana Elcock (Sean) and his sons Brian (Shelly), Spencer (Stephanie) and Evan (Morgan), 22 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Dad loved telling jokes, visiting with people who came to grab a sub from his business, Ned’s Krazy Sub, as well as serving others and spending time with his family. Dad was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life. He served in a variety of callings in the church and loved the opportunity to share his faith and testimony in Jesus Christ.

A great man and friend. I learned many things from him. Glad he is with Arlene again to keep him in line.

  • Preston and Cindy Davis

Ned and Preston worked together just prior to Ned starting up his sub shop. The two if them shared a joke a day for about a year. Besides being part of the family, Ned (and Arlene) we’re great to spend time with. He will be sweetly remembered.

  • Natasha White-Rodriquez

So many great memories with Ned growing up and the many visits to the shop with my family. He will be greatly missed by so many. Praying that you all find comfort during this time.

  • Ned was one of my high school favorite friends. He kept us in stitches with his wonderful sense of humor. I enjoyed visiting with him and remembering the past at his shop on Gilbert Road. It was reassuring to see his family picture and hear of his inspiration during Vai Sikahema’s conference talk in October. Ned is a good man.

  • Carol (Avery) Echols

I have always been grateful to Ned because he introduced my to my husband, Wayne Echols, when we were students at MCC so many years ago. Loved hearing about him in the conference talk and not surprised that he gave years and years of joy and service.

  • Anthony Shumway (Tony)

So many smiles. So much good food. So much fun conversation. With Ned, most everything was positive and upbeat. If it was only for his smile and great outlook on life he would be missed terribly. But, of course, he was a lot more than that. Thanks, Ned, for all the good times through all these years! God bless!

  • RIP Ned the Catcher (suwingahhh!), AKA Tubby Beasley.

    Dear Brimley Family,
I feel your loss and want you to know how much you are loved. Ned and Arlene, you are loved also!
Ned’s smile, sense of humor, and frankness will be greatly missed. I will fondly call him Bishop.
So I have to tell you a secret, in our travels back east, Robert and I saw a sign “VOTE NED.” I had to have it, so Robert pulled over and I jumped out and took the sign out of the ground, quickly put it in the car and we drove off. We brought that sign home with us and wrote some kind words on it and stuck it in your dad’s front yard. Why… because we wanted Ned to know he was a fabulous human being and we were thinking of him!
He is with your sweet mother now and I know he is overjoyed! Always remember, you have been born of goodly parents! All my love, Rosanne

  • He will be missed any time we go have a sammich.

My first intro to Ned was the delicious Crazy Sub in high school when a friend took me there for lunch. I would imagine I saw Ned there, or on a subsequent trip, but didn’t realize it was him.

Then I met Lanae in college at EAC and made that connection. I love Lanae. She is enthusiasm personified. I was sad when she left us so early.

And then, I joined the ‘older single adult’ group for FHE and got to know Ned (in person). He opened his home and was an effervescent, wise, and so lovingly honest – it was hard to feel he wasn’t family. Knowing and being friends with Lanae, I just sort of felt like you all were – (anonymously) my extended family.

He gave us a scare several years ago when word went round the group of his heart attack, and we all prayed and were so happy to see him rally and return. He will always be a fond friend and I will look forward to seeing him and Lanae again.

    Love to your family!

  • The front half of Ned and Ed is gone. We have been friends since teens, but the last 15 years has been the closest. I will miss our lunches and jokes. To your family I love you all! My condolences…

We will miss you our dear friend, but also very happy for the reunion you are having with your loved ones beyond the veil.

I came to love Ned Brimley when I was a child. I remember going on a 24th Ward “Father and Daughter Outing.” We had a campfire that night where everyone had gathered. Ned Brimley and Steve Krummenacher contributed to the fireside entertainment. I don’t remember much about the story except it had something to do with a horse. At the end of the story they said something about its guts and then threw a large bucket of it’s contents across the crowd! I was both horrified and ecstatic at the same time as I quickly realized it’s contents would greatly satisfy my sweet tooth… CANDY! Since that moment, I reserved a place in my heart for these two giants of men. What a privilege to grow up in such a ward and be raised amongst such GREATS. ~ My deepest condolences to the entire Brimley family! ❤️

Ned was the most patient boss with me, a mostly quiet, insecure teenager. He was kind and supportive, and working for him helped me gain skills and confidence I wouldn’t have otherwise. It was a tremendous blessing to have him in my life!
It’s a comfort to know he is with Arlene, Lanae, and other loved-ones now.

  • Avery Brimley (granddaughter)

I love you Papi and I miss you so much! Your making subs up in heaven.
