Service Location: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gilbert 6th Ward Chapel, 2700 E. Guadalupe Road, Gilbert, Arizona

Sheldon R. Cook, 53, passed from this life while surrounded by family in his home on January 20, 2015. He was born on August 29, 1961 in Moses Lake, WA, and spent most of his childhood in the Great Northwest where he attended Lake Oswego High School. Sheldon served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Adelaide, Australia Mission. Post-mission he met his wife, Kittrean Tanner, and they were married and sealed in the Salt Lake City LDS temple, November 6, 1986. Sheldon earned a Bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University in Business Administration. After graduation he spent seven years in the Indian Trade business in Farmington and Shiprock, New Mexico. Sheldon then moved his family to Gilbert, Arizona where he started and was a partner at a mortgage lending company. Later in his career, he became a successful real estate agent in the valley. Diagnosed with cancer in late 2008, Sheldon maintained high spirits during his six year battle and never slowed down, working up until five days before he died. Sheldon especially loved family, friends, tennis and papaya. He took pride in his children’s accomplishments and went out of his way to help neighbors and friends.

Those who wish to pay their respects are invited to a family and friends reception at Bunker’s Garden Chapel, 33 N. Centennial Way in Mesa on Friday, January 23rd, 6-8:00 pm.  The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 24th, 11:00 am at the LDS Chapel located at 2700 E. Guadalupe Road in Gilbert, Arizona. Interment will be at the City of Mesa Cemetery.

    Kit, Estee, Noah, Peri and Chloe;
    What a great husband and father — Sheldon loved his family, and often spoke of how proud he was of each one of you. He cared and loved deeply. He was a great friend, I often leaned on him for strength as we shared our cancer journey. I looked forward to our talks, knowing he would understand. We will all miss him dearly. Our prayers and open arms of love go out to you all of you. Eric and I pray each one of you will find some peace in your hearts, knowing he is out of pain.

  • Todd and Linda Harper

    Dear Kit and family our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. What a tremendous example of love and long suffering you have been to is all. Our hearts ache for you but we know the peace that comes from the gospel.

  • Sheldon was the listing agent on a home I sold around thanksgiving. Something about his name made me ask if he had ever lived in Lake Oswego OR. Sure enough he had, and we had a great conversation discussing mutual acquaintances. His father, Marion Cook, owned a tractor and plowed a garden for my father in the backyard of our home. My dad was a city boy and working in that garden had become his joy. I later worked on a few landscaping projects with his dad. Sheldon and I talked about getting together to talk more of old times. He was a pleasure to work with and quick to resolve any issue during the transaction. He never mentioned once his illness and I was surprised by his death! What a great example of enduring to the end! He has touched my life. God bless his family at such a loss.

  • I’m so sorry for your loss Judy Jones

  • I worked for Sheldon, a good and honorable man with a great sense of humor. Condolences to the Family for the loss of a wonderful husband and father.

  • Sheldon was the FIRST to visit our home and welcome us in the ward when we moved to Arizona more than a decade ago. I remember his genuine kindness and warm, sincere welcome. He was an example of what a Christ-centered individual should be. Our prayers are with you and your family and along with you are grateful for the knowledge that families ARE forever.

  • Gerald and Janice Weinheimer

    We were so sorry to hear of Sheldon’s passing. We hadn’t heard. We discovered at his his mom’s funeral that Sheldon was very ill. We were shocked to now discover that he has passed and we knew nothing about it. We are so sad that we didn’t get to see Sheldon. We missed him the day of his mom’s funeral and were so heart-sick that the brothers were going through this as well. Jonathan spent a long time talking with Gerald and me about his situation. I can see those little boys running around and playing when they came to visit us. We cherish the family gatherings that we had with one another. We shall have an emptiness in our hearts knowing that he has gone. I’m sure he is having a great reunion with his mom and dad on the other side and other relatives as well. Please know that our prayers and thoughts and blessings are with you and your family. If you ever visit UT and are near American Fork, we would love to hear from any of you. Sending you big hugs and blessings of love and peace at this difficult time. Uncle Gerald and Aunt Jan Weinheimer

  • Robin & Bob Johantgen

    Bob & I are so sad to learn of Sheldon’s passing. We were having coffee this morning, and Sheldon came into our minds. We realized we had not heard from him in a very long time. We called the number we had for him, searched FB, and finally the Internet. There we discovered his obituary. We are so saddened by this news. Even though it’s been a long time, this is very new to us, and we did not want to let it go without telling you how much we loved Sheldon. He did the financing for every single house we have, and did some of them 2 to 3 times. We met Sheldon in 2002. We met your children, we remember when you got your cabin in Payson, we remember when he came by and told us of the fires in Payson. He came by our home in 2013 and told us about his bout with cancer. We had no idea it was ongoing, he never let on. We shared many stories of our families over the years. We will miss him desperately. He will never be forgotten. Robin & Bob
