Richard Gilbert Barton Jr., 65, passed away February 9, 2018 at his winter home in Gilbert, AZ.

Rick and the love of his life Kathleen Barton married in Salt Lake City, UT on June 10, 1972 and were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. He leaves behind 5 children: Dr. Brandon, Tyler (Rochelle), Megan, Josh (Dianna) and Camille Hugill (Thomas) as well as 11 grandchildren who he enjoyed more than anything in his life. His selfless dedication to supporting his posterity both financially and spiritually was fathomless as he split time between his family in both Arizona and San Diego.

Rick was most happy working on his many home improvement projects having built his family’s Salt Lake City home himself and continued later in life designing innovative creations to improve the life of his friends and family. We will all miss learning from the Master RGB.

Born May 22, 1952 in Salt Lake City, UT to Richard Gilbert Barton Sr. and Marjorie Yvonne Barton. Preceded in death by his brother James (1951), Rick is survived by his 7 siblings: Diana Webb (Randy), Dave (Janice), Dr. Jeff (Debbie), Laurie Pinegar (Joseph), Holly Hurst (Bruce), Chris (Earlene), Becca Adams (Bob) as well as sister-in-law Joyce Muhlestein (Ray) and brother-in-law Dr. Gordon B. White.

A man of Rick’s influence and vitality is not often encountered. He continued his high school athletic successes as a team captain all-state football player at the University of Utah on the Utes football team. Rick’s work ethic was something to marvel at as he would later build his own business in 1979, successfully operating it for 19 years before selling it in 1997. His life’s journey would take him to the beaches of San Diego where he enjoyed many years with his family. He continued there professionally as a foregone expert in his industry, fittingly working right up to his very last day of life.

Rick mentored countless professional colleagues, silently supported innumerable friends and family emotionally and financially, engaged vividly with everyone in his path and left a memorable impression everywhere with his unique character.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 16 at 10:00 am at the LDS Church Freestone Park Ward, 230 N Val Vista Drive, Gilbert AZ, 85234. Friends are welcome to attend a viewing Thursday, February 15 at Bunker Family Funeral Home, 33 N. Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ 85201 from 6-8 pm, and Friday at the church from 9:00 to 9:45 am prior to the services.

Interment will be at San Tan Memorial Gardens at Schnepf Farms following the morning service.

Condolences

  • I am so sorry for your loss. Your dad gave me my fist summer job when I was in junior high. Tyler and I had a blast working in his warehouse. He was a great man and even though I haven’t seen him in decades, I still remember all the fun I had with him and his family.

  • You can judge the character of a man by the life his children have. I have had the pleasure of working with Tyler for 15 years and you can tell what kind of man Tyler’s father was if you have ever had the pleasure of spending just 10 minutes with Tyler. There really aren’t many out there who are more caring than Tyler, and you can tell this comes directly from his father.

  • Best wishes to the family of Rick Barton. We had an exceptional Skyline HS Class of 1970 and Rick exemplified the best of the best. Friendly, accomplished, athletic, engaging smile, and as it turns out, a very successful individual in business, family, and pursuit of what matters in life. Personally and collectively as a class, we will miss him and express our deepest sympathies to his family and network of love ones.

From the time that tall, good-looking, crossing guard (with badge) walked into Mrs. Hall’s 6th grade class at Oakridge Elementary School, Rick Barton has held a special place in my heart. Not only was Rick handsome, he was also smart, kind, and a leader. Rick was a good friend in grade school, junior high, and high school. I have such fond and funny memories of him, his mom, sister Diana, brother Dave, and wife Kathy. My thoughts and prayers go out to his lovely family. Rick will certainly be missed by all who knew him.

  • Dear Kathy and family! I love you all! I loved Rick and always will. He was a sweet brother to me. He will be deeply missed. May we all treasure the good memories and keep them all alive! There are so many on the other side that are celebrating Rick’s life and are so happy to see him. I know this to be true! Love you all! Best always!

Very sorry to hear of Ricks passing. We were friends and team mates in high school. Just a great guy and probably the fiercest competitor I’ve ever met. Sorry for your loss and rest in peace brother.

  • Dear Barton Family, I was very saddened to hear of Ricl’s passing and your loss, and will always remember him as an energetic and optimistic soul. In recent years we saw less of him here at Leucadia Pines, evidently he was in Arizona more than on the coast, so that regrettably I’ve been out of touch with him for awhile, no doubt also because of all the personal obligations and distractions. Rick clearly had a rich family life, but even as a neighbor I will remember him warmly as an optimisitc doer, a positive force for community and harmony. Rest in peace, Rick. My condolences to all of the Barton family and friends.

  • My deep condolences to the Barton family,
I was really touched by the loss of your loved one. When a precious loved one falls asleep in death, it brings to mind God’s precious son Jesus. It is comforting to note how he viewed death. I would like to share it with you from the gift that the Most High God has given to each & everyone of us. His written word the Bible in the Book of John chapter 11 verses 11-14.
Please, notice that Jesus viewed death as one Sleeping. He viewed death in such a comforting way. And, the Most High God promises that we can have the opportunity to see our loved ones again in perfect health (Psalms 83:18, Acts 24:15, & Isaiah 33:24). He even says where: Psalms 37:11 and for how long Psalms 37:29). I really hope that these promises were as comforting to you as they were to us when our daughter died and also when my precious husband of 50 years fell asleep in death.
Written to you in deep sympathy,
    Sissy

We are so sad to learn of Rick’s passing. He was special man and shared his talents with everyone. One morning soon after we met him we found him on our front porch ready to help Allen lay tile in our entry.
May many happy memories help you all through this difficult time. He will be missed.
May Heavenly Father watch over you all,
    Allen & Elaine Child
