She went to Liberty Elementary School, Lincoln Junior High School and South High School. She also attended the University of Utah until she was married.

She married John Richard (Dick to friends and JR to his family) McGhan on August 12th, 1948. Their marriage and family was later sealed together for time and eternity in the Salt Late Temple on June 28th, 1962. While living in Salt Lake, she had 5 sons; Craig Richard McGhan, Brian Wayne McGhan, David Owen McGhan, Curtis Clark McGhan and Mark Douglas McGhan. Joyce adored her family and spent her life caring for them and serving them. They were her life. She supported her husband in everything he did. She always said her marriage was perfect. In 1973 the family moved to Arizona and had their first home in Tempe, and later moved to the city of Mesa, where she remained until her death.

She always said she was greatly blessed with her daughters-in-law and loved them very much. As for her grandchildren, they were the light of her life. She loved them and always looked forward to the time that she could spend with them.
