  • Dear Aunt Alice, Daniel, Maureen, Doug and family… I am sitting here with tears and laughter. My heart is filled with so many wonderful memories with Uncle Donnie and all of you. Aunt Alice, one of the last times you and Uncle Donnie drove to California for a visit… Doug was flying in a day or two later. I drove Uncle Donnie to LAX to pick him up. After several circles around the airport, to the point of dizziness and laughter, Uncle Donnie decided to hop out and look for Doug while I kept with the circling. After driving by… several more times… I spotted them, pulled over and motioned for them to jump in. Even though I thought we did it in a rather expedient manner… there was a rather abrupt, ‘TAP! TAP! TAP!’, on my window…. I turned, and there he was, one of LA’s finest… a police officer… motioning with a rather sharp, pointed finger… looking like he was about to explode… telling me to pull over to the curb… *gulp* ticket time! Uncle Donnie just kept telling me not to worry about it. That it was okay even though I felt like my skin had shrunk about 2 sizes too small around my bone frame from the embarrassment of it all. Well, at least we had a good laugh on the way home after I received the scolding of a lifetime from the officer. And that’s one of the things I keep coming back to… his calm and gentle nature, no matter what the situation. I don’t think I ever saw him angry or upset. But then, I wasn’t there in the Spring when the the snow had melted and the ice had thawed… revealing the chips and chunks out of the side of your pool after we had ice skated on top of it while we were there for your birthday, Aunt Alice. (uh-oh!) The time I made the giant ‘heart’ out of snow and told you that I’d, ‘left my heart in South Dakota!’… with all of you. It was a short, yet magical visit… one I will never forget. And as I reminisce over all of these memories… I am reminded of his loving and caring smile… his gentle nature… and his obvious love for all of you. My love, thoughts and prayers are with you… God Bless you all. And, God Bless you, Uncle Donnie… may God always hold you in the palm of His hand.

  • Sending love and prayers to you, Aunt Alice, and all our cousins, family and friends. I have the fondest memories of time spent with you and Uncle Donnie, Danny, Maureen and Doug- and those from even farther back when I was quite young! What a kind and gentle man he was, and the most wonderful uncle! May he Rest In Peace and may God watch over you and bless you and our cousins. Much love to all of you! Kelli, Dave and family

  • In the 60 years I have been on this earth, I have met very few people so deserving of my love and respect as my Uncle Donnie. My Aunt Alice and Uncle Donnie are just two of the best people I will ever know and I am so Blessed to be their nephew. Aunt Alice, Dan, Maureen and Doug… you have been and will continue to be in my prayers. All my love, Mike

  • My dear sister Alice, Daniel, Maureen, Doug and family, I am just so very sorry. There are no words to express my sorrow at the loss of one of my most favorite people. I can remember all the special moments in your lives, especially each new addition to your lovely family. All the gatherings we shared together… enjoying steaks and Manhattans… when you lived here, in California. So many great and wonderful memories. One of my fondest was the time Donnie invited us back to South Dakota to surprise you for your birthday. He flew us back with Anita and Pat, Meagan, Tim and Amy. We had a memorable gathering at your home with lots of laughter and pictures together. It had been snowing and the kids were all having such a great time. It just showed how much he loved you. Dear Donald, at his own expense, gathering your siblings together and arranging the birthday party in your honor. And all of the visits over the years…. we sure had a lot of fun together. Although I am unable to be there, know that I am with all of you in spirit. You are all very dear in my heart and I am with you in your sorrow. Love, Coke

Dear Aunt Alice, Dan, Maureen, Doug, and Family,

As we struggle to find words to convey our deepest sympathy for the pain and sorrow you’re feeling at this time, we can only give you words that our Lord has given us…

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

God promises to be with you and to get you through this time of grief and sorrow. It may be hard to believe that anything can right now, even God, but lean into Him. And, as His, we are praying for you all…for strength to carry you through all you’re enduring, peace to calm your minds, knowing that you’re loved and supported by all of those that care for you all, and even joy…knowing that Uncle Donnie is now home.

…as it is written “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, the things God has prepared for those who love Him-” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Uncle Donnie was a special man, a beautiful human being…no one knows that more than those dearest to him, his family. He will be missed by all, but not forgotten.

    We love you all,

    Kristi, Bruce, Alexa and Max
